Freelancer or Design Studio in Egypt: Which Should You Hire for Your App or Website?
Hire a freelancer for a small, clear job you can manage yourself. Hire a studio when you need several skills, a fixed deadline and one accountable party. A direct comparison of cost, speed, risk and support after launch.
Hire a freelancer when the job is small and clearly defined, such as a logo, a landing page or a fix to an existing site, and you can manage the work yourself. Hire a design studio or a software house when you need several skills at once (UX, UI, front end, back end, mobile), a deadline you cannot miss, or someone accountable after launch. In Egypt both options are easy to find: freelancers on Khamsat, Mostaql, Upwork and LinkedIn, and studios and software houses in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities. The right choice depends on the size of the project and how much management you can take on.
What is the difference?
| Freelancer | Design studio | Software house | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | One person | A small senior team, design-led | A larger team, engineering-led |
| Typical strength | One skill, done well | Product design and the build | Large builds and integrations |
| Cost | Lowest | Middle | Middle to high |
| Speed on small jobs | Fast | Fast | Slower to start |
| Speed on large projects | Limited by one person | Parallel work | Parallel work |
| Who manages the project | You | The studio | A project manager |
| Risk if someone becomes unavailable | High | Lower | Lower |
| After launch | Depends on the person | Usually a support plan | Usually a support contract |
When is a freelancer the right choice?
- One deliverable with a clear brief: a logo, social media designs, a landing page, a small fix
- A budget that does not cover a team
- You, or someone on your team, can manage and review the work
- You need extra hands for a short period on a project you already run
When should you hire a studio or a software house?
- The product needs research, UX, UI and development together
- Several platforms: iOS, Android, web and an admin panel
- A deadline tied to money: a launch, an investor meeting, a campaign
- You want one accountable party for the result, not five people to coordinate
- The product will need updates and support after launch
What are the hidden costs of each?
The cheapest quote is often the most expensive project, because nobody priced the parts that were left out.
With freelancers, the hidden costs are coordination (you become the project manager), gaps between the designer and the developer, and continuity if the person takes a full-time job. With agencies, the hidden costs are change requests when the scope was vague, and paying for process you may not need on a small job.
How do you check a freelancer or a studio?
1. Ask for live work, not only screenshots: app store links and working websites. 2. Ask who will actually work on your project, by name. 3. Ask for a written scope and milestones before paying. See 12 clauses to check in a development contract. 4. Check reviews on Clutch, Google or the freelance platform, and talk to a past client if you can. 5. Make sure every account will be in your name: domain, hosting, app stores and code.
Can you combine both?
Yes. A common setup is a studio for the product design and the core build, and freelancers for content, photography or social media. The opposite also works: a freelancer for a quick landing page to test demand, then a studio once the idea is proven. Software houses that need more designers can also add them to their own team; see staff augmentation for software houses.

Frequently asked questions
Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency in Egypt?
Per hour, usually yes. For a full product, the total can end up close once coordination, rework and the gaps between design and development are counted.
Are Khamsat and Mostaql safe for hiring?
They hold the payment until the work is delivered, which reduces the risk on small jobs. For larger projects, a written scope and milestone payments matter more than the platform.
Can one freelancer build a full app?
Some can build a simple app. A product with an admin panel, payments and two mobile platforms usually needs more than one skill set.
What is the difference between a design studio and a software house?
A design studio leads with product design and user experience, and may build the product too. A software house leads with engineering. Many products need both.
How do I know whether my project is small?
If you can describe it on one page and it has one main user flow, it is usually small. If it has several types of users, payments or integrations, it is not.
