What Is a Clickable Prototype, and Do You Need One Before Pitching Investors?
A clickable prototype shows exactly how your product will work before any code is written. How it differs from a mockup and an MVP, when it strengthens a first-round pitch, and what it should include.
A clickable prototype is a realistic design of your app or website that people can tap through like the real thing, with no code behind it. It is usually built in Figma, takes days to a few weeks instead of months, and lets investors, partners and users see exactly how the product will work. If you are raising a first round without a built product, a strong prototype often makes the pitch clearer than slides alone, because people understand a product faster when they can use it.
Mockup, clickable prototype or MVP: what is the difference?
| Mockup | Clickable prototype | MVP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Static screens | Linked screens you can tap through | A working product with real data |
| Code | None | None | Yes |
| Typical time | Days | One to four weeks | Weeks to months |
| Who uses it | The team | Investors, partners, test users | Real customers |
| What it proves | The look | The flow and the idea | That people will use it and pay |
A prototype answers "what will this be and how will it work?" An MVP answers "will people actually use it?" See how to build an MVP in six weeks.
Do investors want to see a prototype?
Investors back teams and markets, and a prototype does not replace traction. What it does is remove doubt about the product: investors stop imagining and start reacting. A prototype helps most when:
- The product is hard to explain in words: a marketplace, a fintech flow, a B2B dashboard
- You are pre-revenue and have no product yet
- You want to show that you understand the user, not only the market
- You plan to use the funding to build, and need to show what you will build
It helps least when you already have a live product with users. Then show the product and the numbers.
What should an investor prototype include?
1. The core flow only: the three to five screens that show the value, such as sign up, the main action and the result 2. Realistic content: real names, prices and text in Arabic or English, not placeholder text 3. Your brand: a simple identity, so it looks like a company and not a template 4. A short story: a walkthrough you can demo in two minutes during the pitch 5. The right device: if it is a mobile product, demo it on a phone
How to use the prototype in the pitch
Show the product early. Two minutes of a real flow answer questions that ten slides cannot.
- Put two or three key screens in the deck, and demo the live prototype in the meeting
- Send the prototype link after the meeting so investors can share it with their partners
- Test it with five real users before the pitch, and mention what you learned. See usability testing with 5 users
What a prototype does not prove
- That the technology can be built at the cost you expect
- That customers will pay
- That you can acquire users at a sensible cost
Be honest about this in the pitch: say what the prototype shows, and what the funding will prove.
Common mistakes
- Designing every screen instead of the core flow
- A beautiful prototype of a flow nobody tested
- Features in the prototype that the budget cannot build
- Design files that developers cannot use once the round closes
How Flowlix designs prototypes for founders
Flowlix Studio is a UI/UX design and development studio in Ismailia, Egypt. Its founder, Ahmed Bassam, has designed products for early-stage startups that went on to raise their first funding, and for government, legal and fintech products used by more than 10 million people. Flowlix designs clickable prototypes in Figma that developers can build from directly, and can build the MVP after the round. We work with founders in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar. Frequently asked questions
How long does a clickable prototype take?
For a core flow of a few screens, usually one to three weeks, depending on how clear the idea is.
Can developers build the product from the prototype?
Yes, if it is designed properly in Figma with components and clear specs. That saves time later.
Do I need a prototype before an MVP?
Not always, but it is the cheapest way to test the flow and catch problems before paying for development.
Should investors sign an NDA before seeing the prototype?
Most investors do not sign NDAs at the pitch stage. Share what explains the product, and keep sensitive details for later stages.
Is a prototype enough for an accelerator application?
For many programmes, a prototype with a clear problem and a strong team makes a solid application. Check each programme's requirements.
