UX Audit: What It Is, a 30-Point Checklist, and What It Costs (2026)
A UX audit finds where users get confused or drop off and tells you what to fix first. Here's what one includes, a 30-point checklist to start with, and typical costs and timelines.
A UX audit is an expert review of an existing website or app that finds where users get confused, slow down or drop off — and tells you what to fix first. It usually combines a heuristic review against established usability principles, a look at your analytics and funnels, and a prioritised list of fixes. For a typical business site it takes one to two weeks, and it is the cheapest way to find out why a product that looks fine is not converting.
This guide covers what an audit includes, a 30-point checklist you can start with yourself, typical costs, and when an audit is — and is not — the right move.
When do you need a UX audit?
- Traffic is healthy but sign-ups, leads or sales are flat
- Users complain, or support keeps answering the same "how do I…" questions
- You are about to redesign and want to know what to keep and what to change
- A key flow — checkout, onboarding, booking — has a high drop-off
- You launched an Arabic version and it performs worse than the English one
If you have almost no traffic yet, an audit has little data to work with. Start with a design review of your key flows instead.
What does a UX audit include?
| Part | What happens | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Heuristic review | Experts walk key flows against usability principles | Issues listed by screen and severity |
| Analytics review | Funnels, drop-off points, device and page data | Where users actually leave |
| Mobile and speed check | Real devices, slow connections | Performance and layout problems |
| Accessibility basics | Contrast, labels, tap targets, keyboard use | Quick wins that help everyone |
| Content and trust | Clarity of offer, pricing, proof, calls to action | Copy and structure fixes |
| Prioritised roadmap | Impact vs effort for every issue | What to fix this week, this month, later |
Some audits also include short usability tests with five or so real users. That adds time and cost, but it replaces opinions with evidence.
A 30-point UX audit checklist
First impression and clarity
- Can a new visitor tell what you offer within five seconds?
- Is there one primary call to action per page?
- Is the value stated in the customer's words, not internal jargon?
- Is pricing, or a clear next step to get pricing, easy to find?
- Are proof points visible — clients, reviews, numbers, case studies?
Navigation and structure
- Can users reach any key page within two or three taps?
- Do menu labels match what users search for?
- Is search available and useful where there is a lot of content?
- Are breadcrumbs or back paths clear on deep pages?
- Do links and buttons look clickable?
Forms and flows
- Are forms as short as possible?
- Are errors explained inline, in plain language?
- Does the phone keyboard switch to numbers for phone fields?
- Can users check out or book as guests?
- Is progress shown in multi-step flows?
Mobile
- Are tap targets large enough and spaced apart?
- Does anything overflow sideways on a small phone?
- Is the main call to action reachable without long scrolling?
- Do sticky bars or chat widgets cover content or buttons?
- Is text readable without zooming?
Speed and technical
- Does the main content load in under about three seconds on mobile data?
- Are images compressed and correctly sized?
- Does the layout jump while loading?
- Do all key pages work without errors in the browser console?
- Are there broken links or dead-end pages?
Language, trust and accessibility
- Is the Arabic version designed right-to-left, not just flipped?
- Is text contrast sufficient against backgrounds?
- Do images and icons have meaningful labels?
- Are contact details, address and company information easy to find?
- Is the experience consistent between Arabic and English?
How much does a UX audit cost?
Cost depends on how many flows and screens are reviewed and whether user testing is included. As a guide, typical studio ranges look like this:
| Scope | Typical time | Typical price (Saudi Arabia) |
|---|---|---|
| One key flow (checkout, onboarding, booking) | 3–5 days | SAR 2,500 – 5,000 |
| Business website (up to ~10 key pages) | 1–2 weeks | SAR 5,000 – 10,000 |
| Web or mobile app / platform | 2–4 weeks | SAR 10,000 – 20,000+ |
Adding moderated user testing typically extends the timeline by a week. In Egypt the same scopes are priced lower in EGP terms. Treat these as starting points — a studio should give you a fixed quote once it has seen the product.
What makes an audit worth paying for?
An audit that ends in a 90-page PDF nobody reads is a cost. An audit that ends in ten prioritised fixes your team can ship next sprint is an investment.
- Prioritisation. Every issue should be ranked by impact and effort.
- Specificity. "Improve the checkout" is not a finding. "The delivery field rejects Saudi national address formats" is.
- Visual evidence. Screenshots or recordings for each issue.
- A path to fixing it. Ideally the same team can redesign and build the fixes, so nothing is lost in handoff.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a UX audit and usability testing?
An audit is an expert review; usability testing watches real users attempt tasks. Audits are faster and cheaper; testing produces stronger evidence. The best audits combine both.
Can I do a UX audit myself?
You can start with the checklist above, and you will find real issues. The limit is that it is hard to see your own product with fresh eyes, and prioritising fixes takes experience.
Is a UX audit the same as an SEO audit?
No. An SEO audit looks at how search engines find and rank you. A UX audit looks at what happens after people arrive. They overlap on speed, mobile and structure, which is why they are often done together.
